The group of Calleja companies is a family owned business with over 50 years experience in industrial waste transport since the family moved from Malta to Melbourne in 1948.
In 1990 Calleja Transport purchased the Maddingley Brown Coal mine at Bacchus Marsh mainly for the 13.5 million cubic metre hole, which was to be used as an EPA licensed landfill site.
Coal mining operations originally started at Maddingley in 1942 with the present open cut mine commencing in 1946. Originally the mine supplied steaming coal to the APM paper mills at Broadford and Fairfield as well as to several hospitals and other industrial customers. The advent of cheap natural gas curtailed these uses and as a result steaming coal sales ceased altogether with the closure of the CSR Bacchus Marsh hardboards plant in 1998.
By the late 1990's, natural gas was no longer cheap and using a new, patented, drying process the company is confident that they will soon be able to re-enter the steaming coal market, with a product equivalent to high quality black coal. Meanwhile other uses for Maddingley Brown Coal are being aggressively developed. Current coal mining activities are directed entirely at agricultural use, which is steadily growing in demand.
MBC Soils have been making soils for, Horticulture, Agriculture and Landscaping for over 10 years. MBC Soils, operating under it’s trading name MADDINGLEY MINERALS, has repeat orders for brown coal from egg plant producers in Cairns, cotton and potato growers in central Queensland, and grape growers in Victoria, South Australia and Italy. Additionally moves are underway to begin sales in European supermarkets.
As a part of their environmental diligence, Maddingley Minerals is combining brown coal with recycled safe industrial wastes to produce a range of high quality topsoils. These soils, produced under controlled conditions and to Australian Standards, can be blended to suit user requirements.
